kWh describes energy over time.
Appliance duty cycles & starting surge +
Duty cycle accounts for cycling compressors. Surge is the starting power multiplier for one appliance; an engineer must confirm simultaneous starts.

Fine-tune sizing assumptions +
Built on your load list, with room to plan.
Each battery unit must match the selected bank voltage; lead-acid units represent complete series banks. This is a preliminary energy estimate. A site assessment must confirm shading, seasonal sunlight, motor starts, battery discharge current, inverter and MPPT limits, and installation requirements.
How the calculation works
Daily energy = quantity × watts × daily hours × duty cycle. Backup energy uses the lesser of each appliance’s daily hours and your backup duration, for selected appliances. This assumes that usage falls within the backup window.
Battery capacity = backup energy ÷ inverter efficiency ÷ usable depth of discharge, plus headroom. Solar capacity = daily energy ÷ inverter efficiency ÷ battery energy efficiency ÷ peak sun hours ÷ solar yield factor, plus headroom. Solar assumes one day’s energy replenished per day, with all energy passing through storage: a conservative planning case. It does not model weather or multi-day autonomy.
Inverter capacity covers all connected appliances operating together, plus headroom. kVA uses your chosen rated power factor. Starting demand assumes the single largest appliance start above the connected load. Confirm both continuous watts and manufacturer surge duration before selecting equipment.
Assumptions are editable, not location-specific guarantees. Background: Victron off-grid sizing · NREL PVWatts loss modelling.
